Boost or Promote Posts on Facebook?

facebook-iconYou might have heard that Facebook have decreased the organic reach for pages. Unfortunately therefore this means that you might need to spend a little money on Facebook ads to be seen in your community’s news feed. However, what is the best way to increase the visibility of your posts, to boost them or promote them?

Deciding which approach to take depends on your Facebook goals, and which posts you would like to increase the visibility for. When considering which posts you would like to use consider the following tips to help you:

  • Promote your own content – try not to use content that links to someone else’s site as why would you want to pay to send more traffic to their site?
  • People are always looking for useful content therefore when choosing content make sure it is helpful for your audience.

Boosting a Post

It is very easy to boost a post, all you need to do is click “Boost Post” on the post itself and you will be presented with a couple of options:

  • pushing the post to “People who like your page and their friends”

or

  • pushing the post to “People you choose through targeting”

There are some pros and cons with choosing the “boost a post” option. It is a very quick way of setting up an ad and can help drive traffic to your website. In addition, selecting the push the post to “people you choose through targeting” option lets you select which people you want to reach, their location, age, gender and up to 10 interests to target. However, if your goal is to engage your current fans it is probably best to use the “promote a post” option.

 

Promoting a Post

There are many benefits in deciding to “promote a post”. Mainly, you are given more targeting, pricing and bidding options. The different bidding and budgeting options you can choose are cost per click, spending a certain amount per day or switching between both models. In addition to the differences in the bidding, you can use their conversion pixel on your website to track the conversions that happen on your website as a result of your ads (a very useful way to understand your ads performance).

 

Choosing which way to increase the visibility of your ad, either by boosting a post or promoting a post, is based on your goals and what you would like to achieve. Boosting a post can provide a quick and easy way to increase the visibility of your post, but promoting a post can provide more control over who sees it and how you pay for it.
