Calls-to-action (CTA) can help encourage visitors into making an enquiry, and thereby improving your conversion rate on your website.

Generally speaking CTAs are short phrases used as a cue for you to carry out an action.

  • There are 7 groups of words that can be used in a CTA (Action, Urgency, Exclusivity, Scarcity, Security, Personalisation and Power Words)
  • Action words e.g. Get Access, Sign Up, Download, Join, Start, Book, Claim, Buy, Improve, Enquire, Register
  • Urgency words e.g. Today, Soon, Now, Hurry, ASAP
  • Personal e.g. You, Me, My, Your
  • Exclusivity e.g. Members only, Only available to
  • Scarcity e.g. Limited Offer, Limited stock, Today only, Only 5 left
  • Security e.g. Lifetime, Protected, Research, Proven, Money back, No Obligation
  • Power Words e.g. Trust, New, Discount, Best, Free, Easy, First, Bonus, Latest, Save, Guarantee

Examples of templates for CTA:

Action word and Urgency – “Book Now!”

Action word + Personal + “keyword” + Urgency – “Improve Your Smile Today!”

Scarcity + Action + Urgency – “Limited Offer. Enquire Today!”

It is not only the words that have an affect on the number of conversions you are likely to receive but the way the CTA is presented. If the CTA is going to be a clickable button you will need to make sure that the design of the button stands out and that it is not hidden within the colour scheme of the website.

Experiment with the CTA’s in your marketing material and website to see if the number of conversions improves, as simple changes can produce dramatic improvements – have a look at some examples.
