Website Caching: Why Website Updates Aren’t Showing

Can’t see your website update, but your account manager is saying the change been completed? Well, we promise we aren’t lying to you. The problem is most likely caused by one thing – caching.

What is Caching?

Caching is the process of storing data in a ‘cache’. This is a subfolder on your hard disk, where web browsers store copies of the web pages you have recently visited. This improves website speed and reduces server load and lagging. The files will be stored in your computer’s ‘cache’, so when you return to the website, the browser can get the files from here rather than waiting for the server each time.

So, caching helps your website, and other websites you visit, run faster. Website speed is an important ranking factor, so caching is an essential system to have in place. However, it can cause some issues.

Caching Issues And How To Resolve Them

The main problem caching can cause is a delay in the display of website changes. It can also impact changes to DNS records or display old error messages that have been fixed. This is because your computer will show a cached version of the site, as you’ve probably visited your practice’s website in the last few days. This can be a frustration when requesting changes to your site.

To resolve caching issues the first step is to perform a refresh of the website. There are a number of ways to do this depending on your computer and browser:

Windows Desktop

Press Control and f5 at the same time.

Mac

Press Command, ALT and E at the same time (when using safari).

Chrome

Click on the menu in the top right-hand corner and navigate to ‘History’. Then move to ‘Clear Browsing Data’ where you will be given the option to clear the cache.

Internet Explorer

Navigate to the gear icon and go to ‘safety’ then ‘delete browsing history’. Uncheck preserve favourite website data and check temporary internet files and cookies, then press delete.

Sometimes website caching can be very strong. If clearing the cache using the methods above doesn’t work, you might need to carry out the following:

– View the site in an ‘incognito’ or private browsing view
– Completely clear browsing history
– Turn your router on and off
